Driftless Region’s Día de los Muertos Celebration: A Mexican Cultural and Educational Event

October 8 @ 2:00 pm - 8:30 pm EDT

The second annual “Driftless Region’s Día de los Muertos Celebration: A Mexican Cultural and Educational Event” will be held at Keewaydin Farms at 15270 Haucke Ln, Viola, WI on Saturday, October 8th, 2022 from 1:00 – 7:30 pm.

Día de los Muertos, also known as the Day of the Dead, is a traditional Mexican cultural festival to honor loved ones who have passed away. This one-day festival offers modalities to honor loved ones and hands-on workshops to engage attendees in Mexican folk art. A Day of the Dead Altar or Ofrenda is constructed during the festival and attendees are encouraged to bring a photograph of a loved one who has passed away to add to the Ofrenda.

Hands-on workshops include: sugar skulls, corn husk flowers, embroidery, and nixtamal tortilla-making. Attendees can participate in painting a community mural, playing a traditional Loteria game with staff from the Consulate of Mexico in Milwaukee, and watching a professional Aztec Dance performance.

There will be a live fashion show featuring guest artist, Julieta Zavala, who will present traditional Catrina dresses, including her innovative “Corn Husk Dresses.”

There is no cost for entry and workshops are free at this outdoor event.

Two food vendors accept cash and serve all day. Artists accept cash for art purchases. No credit transactions. No ATM available. No pets allowed. Camping available. Contact to register for a camping site.

This festival is supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts and with support from Mexican Folk Art Collective, Driftless Curiosity, the Consulate of Mexico in Milwaukee and McIntosh Memorial Library.
