SUMMARY:California Organic Center Field Day
DESCRIPTION:Beyond Plastic: From Sink to Source In plant physiology\, young leaves function as sinks. They require energy and nutrients to grow. As they mature\, they become sources\, producing carbohydrates through photosynthesis and supporting the rest of the plant. Modern agriculture operates as a sink\, dependent on continuous external inputs such as water\, fertilizers\, energy\, and plastic to maintain productivity. Future agriculture operates as a source\, a source of clean water\, stable soils\, local food security\, and economic durability for the communities around it. Healthy soils increase water infiltration rather than generating runoff. Rain moves through biologically active soil layers\, where it is filtered and gradually returned to local aquifers\, supporting regional groundwater recharge. Carbon captured through photosynthesis is stabilized in the soil\, improving structure\, moderating field temperatures\, and reducing erosion risk. Hedgerows support pollinators\, birds\, and beneficial insects while also encouraging natural predators that help regulate rodent populations and reduce reliance on chemical control. By reinforcing these processes\, agriculture contributes directly to water quality\, production stability\, and local economic continuity. This Field Day examines that transition. We will take a critical look at plastic mulch\, widely used in both conventional and organic systems\, and present research on high-residue cover crops and reduced tillage as biologically driven alternatives. This is not about eliminating a material. It is about redesigning how the system functions.

SUMMARY:A Grower-Buyer Mixer – Where Virginia Farms Meet Their Match
DESCRIPTION:Are you growing vegetables or grains? Growing organically or thinking about making the transition? Ready to scale up or find new market outlets? If you answered yes to any of these\, this is the room you’ve been waiting for. \nOne night to close the gap between what Virginia farms grow and what local buyers need. If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to get your vegetables or grain into a distillery\, mill\, grocery store\, or regional supply chain\, bring your questions and come get the answers straight from the source. \nThe evening kicks off with a buyer panel featuring grain buyers from the distillery and milling world alongside diversified vegetable buyers from grocery\, food hubs\, and wholesale. Panelists include Evrim Dogu\, Sub Rosa Bakery and Shelley Sackier\, Reservoir Distillery and the Virginia Heritage Grain Project (BOD of Common Grain Alliance). They’ll share what they’re looking for\, what it takes to sell into their operations\, and how to get started. Then the floor opens up\, and the real work begins\, meeting them face to face. \nOur local farms are providing us with the products we need for good food and good drinks\, so come hungry\, come thirsty\, and come ready to talk and connect. \nAll farmers are welcome. Organic focus. Real conversations. No pitch decks are required. \nThe panel tells you what it takes. The mixer is where it happens. \nPresented by Shalom Farms · Virginia Association for Biological Farming · Rodale Institute · Common Grain Alliance \nDetails\nDate: Monday\, April 27 · 5:30–8:30 PM \nLocation:\nStudio Two Three\, 109 W 15th St\, Richmond\, VA 23224 \nCost: FREE

SUMMARY:Webinar: The Agronomy of Fiber Flax
DESCRIPTION:Curious about fiber flax and its potential to reshape the textile industry? Join us to learn more about the PA Flax Project’s mission and the fundaments of growing fiber flax organically. This conversation will cover the agronomy of fiber flax from the growth cycle and its role in crop rotations to fields preparation\, seeding strategies\, and weed management. Part-two of this series will focus on harvesting\, post-harvest handling\, and the marketing of this crop. Presenter: Bill Shick of the PA Flax Project & Catherine Peebles
