The Farm Bill is a huge package of legislation passed roughly every five years. It significantly impacts agriculture, farmers, food access, and nutrition. This legislation directly affects organic farmers, and the funding it provides plays a crucial role in transitioning more U.S. agriculture to organic practices and supporting the success of independent organic farmers.
The Farm Bill undergoes a rigorous process every five years: it’s proposed, debated, and ultimately passed by Congress before being signed into law by the President. The current Farm Bill, the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, was enacted in December 2018 and originally expired in 2023.
Due to significant delays, the 2018 Farm Bill has been extended twice, most recently through September 2025.
Our friends at National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition do a great job of outlining the different farm bill titles and components. Read more about the structure of the farm bill on their site here.
OFA has been actively working to ensure YOUR farm bill priorities are included in the upcoming legislation.

Organic Farmers & Farm Bill Advocacy
Organic Farmers Association is involved in helping develop priorities for the farm bill that would support organic agriculture. The farm bill is a massive bill that is the subject of huge amounts of lobbying, so we partner with many sustainable agriculture and organic organizations to help fight for programs that support a strong organic movement. Organic Farmers Association focuses our efforts on programs that support organic farmers.
For Organic Farmers, By Organic Farmers
Although OFA collaborates with many stakeholders, ultimately only U.S. certified organic farm members receive a vote to set the policy priorities we will advocate for in the farm bill. This allows OFA to truly represent the interests of organic farmers.
