Curious About Transitioning to Organic?
Are you curious if organic is a fit for your operation? We can talk through what organic means, how it works, and what options you have. Organic is a movement based on the principles of health, ecology, fairness, and care, and there is a place for you here.
Many farmers come to us with the same questions: What does it actually take to go organic? How long does organic certification take? Will I lose money during transition? These are exactly the kinds of questions our Farmer Services Team is here to help you work through — honestly and without pressure.
Transitioning to organic farming is a significant decision, and the process looks different for every operation. Whether you’re growing row crops, raising livestock, managing a small market garden, or running a mixed operation, organic certification can open new markets and support a farming system that works with nature rather than against it. The National Organic Program (NOP) sets the federal standards for organic production, but navigating those rules doesn’t have to be overwhelming. We can help you understand what organic certification requires, what inputs are allowed and prohibited, and how organic practices might apply to your specific crops and land.
We can also connect you with organic farmers in your region who have been through the process and are willing to share what they’ve learned. Peer-to-peer learning is one of the most valuable resources available to farmers considering organic, and OFA’s network spans the entire country.

In Transition to Organic Production?
Transitioning to organic is a big commitment and a heavy lift, but you don’t have to do it alone. Transitioning to organic does not need to be mysterious or scary, OFA Farmer Services team is here to support you along the way!
The organic transition period (typically three years for most crops) is one of the most challenging phases a farmer can navigate. You’re managing a shift in inputs, building new soil health practices, learning a new record-keeping system, and often doing it all while running a full farming operation. It’s a lot. Our team has been there, and we’re here to help you get through it.
During your transition to organic, our Farmer Services Team can help you find a USDA-accredited organic certifier that’s a good fit for your operation, understand what documentation and records you’ll need to maintain, identify on-farm programs and assistance available to transitioning farmers, including how to access the USDA’s Organic Certification Cost Share Program, and connect you with farmer networks, educational field days, and mentorship opportunities through OFA’s organizational partners across the country.
We also know that transition can surface unexpected challenges. From neighbors using prohibited pesticides that threaten your organic integrity, to figuring out how to market your products before you’re fully certified. Whatever you’re running into, reach out. Chances are, someone on our team or in our network has dealt with it before.

Already an Organic Farmer?
This movement is built on the backs of organic farmers, and organic farmers do best when they work together. OFA has many opportunities for organic farmers to support one another and address the barriers you face. Call our Farmer Services Team anytime and we will do our best to answer your questions or connect you with someone who can.
Organic certification is just the beginning. Once you’re certified, new challenges emerge: keeping up with changes to the National Organic Program regulations, managing organic crop insurance, and tracking policies that protect organic farmers at the federal level.
OFA’s Farmer Services Team is made up of certified organic farmers who understand these issues from the inside. We can help you navigate organic standards and opportunities, work with your certifier or local USDA offices, connect with other certified organic farmers through regional partner networks, and find resources specific to your commodity, region, or farming system.
Beyond one-on-one support, OFA offers Farmer Workgroups where organic producers can share knowledge, tackle common problems together, and build the kind of community that makes organic farming more resilient for everyone.

Have Another Problem?
In 2024, OFA’s Farmer Services team fielded 144 farmer helpline technical assistance calls to support farmers all along their organic journey. If you have a question and you don’t know where to start. Reach out to our team and we’ll connect you to resources and experts who can help.
Not every farming challenge fits neatly into a category, and that’s exactly why the OFA Farmer HelpLine exists. Our team has helped farmers work through organic certification appeals, disputes with certifiers, questions about allowed and prohibited materials, farm business planning, connecting with organic markets and buyers, accessing USDA programs like EQIP and NRCS, farmer mental health resources, crop and livestock management questions specific to organic systems, and much more.
If you’ve searched online and come up empty, called a source that didn’t really understand organic farming, or just don’t know where to turn, this is the right place. Our Farmer Services Team is composed of certified organic farmers who bring real, on-farm experience to every conversation. We don’t just point you to a website; we take the time to understand your situation and connect you with the right people, programs, and resources for your specific needs, and we will advocate on your behalf if needed.
Organic farming can be isolating, especially in regions where conventional agriculture dominates. OFA exists to make sure no organic farmer has to navigate the challenges of their farm business alone.
